The Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association partnered with Orange County Public Schools to produce the annual Orange County State of the Schools Address at the DoubleTree by Hilton Orlando Downtown. More than 300 Central Florida community and business leaders were in attendance to hear OCPS Chairman Bill Sublette and Superintendent Barbara Jenkins discuss the recent accomplishments and future challenges facing OCPS.
Dr. Phillips Little League’s Dodgers baseball team battled through storms, injuries, tough competition and a hard-fought double-header against the Mighty Brewers to capture the Spring 2017 Majors District Tournament. The boys were led by coaches David Duffy, Dennis Pope and Phil Miller, and team mom was Erika Kessler.
Southwest resident and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the board of county commissioners joined Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette, Southwest resident and Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Jenkins, and OCPS board members to announce the passing of the updated school siting ordinance and participated in a ceremonial signing. The updated ordinance, which was passed at a recent commissioners meeting, establishes standards for OCPS to build new schools and renovate existing sites, including charter schools.
An army of volunteers joined Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn and Orange County Environmental Protection Division employees for the recent Mayor’s Earth Day Cleanup Event. Three different groups spent their morning discarding invasive plants and trash at Fernwood Park, Maguire Road and Bird (Egret) Island.

Arnold Palmer’s celebrated golf career saw seven major titles, including four Masters Tournament championships, 62 PGA Tour wins, 95 professional victories, 26 amateur victories, 10 Champions Tour victories, and six Ryder Cup appearances and World Cup appearances, respectively, until his retirement on Oct. 13, 2006. He then served as an honorary starter for the Masters.
