Bringing Peace & Harmony to the Office

More than 5,000 years ago, a new art form emerged that involved the placement of objects for optimal positive energy. This ancient Chinese practice, known as feng shui, involves the arrangement and organization of space to achieve harmony with the environment. The literal translation of feng shui is “wind and water.” The essence of this art form is to use the natural positive energy, or chi, present in any environment to enhance the surroundings.

According to feng shui practitioners, a clean, organized office space with everything in order allows positive energy to flow freely. This “art of placement” is extensively used within business environments, and even moguls such as Donald Trump incorporate it into their work philosophy.

The following are some helpful feng shui tips for office design, excerpted from Feng Shui Dos & Taboos by Angi Ma Wong:

• Sit in the corner farthest from the entrance to the room to have a “command” position.

• Do not sit in line with the door, as that is the path of negative energy.

• Treat the files in an office with respect. They represent the past, present and future of a business.

• Do not have mirrors in the office, as they can reflect negative energy from clients to other people in the room.

• Place an aquarium or tabletop fountain in the east, north or southeast of the office. A small aquarium with black or blue fish in the north area of a desk or office will activate a business’s success.

• Do not arrange a workspace so that those seated at desks look straight out into a corridor or see the stairs, storage rooms, closets, elevators, escalators or toilets.

• Keep the cords to office equipment well-hidden. This eliminates clutter and allows for the free flow of chi.

These are only a few feng shui principles for the office that bring harmony and relaxation to all in the working environment.
