Westover Club resident Gabriella Guzzi wins the championship ribbon in the Cross Rails Equitation Division at the Grand Cypress Equestrian Center Hunter Show.


Ten-year-old Gabriella Guzzi of Westover Club placed first in the Cross Rails Equitation Division at the Grand Cypress Equestrian Center Hunter Show.

Guzzi earned the championship ribbon after placing first in the Cross Rails Equitation Over-Fence event and second in the Cross Rails Equitation Flat event.

Bay Lakes resident Christopher Moore places first in the 8- and 9-year-olds boys division of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ NFL Punt, Pass & Kick football competition.


Christopher Moore, a fourth-grader at Bay Meadows Elementary School, took first place in the 8- and 9-year-olds boys division of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ NFL Punt, Pass & Kick football competition. Based on his performance, the Bay Lakes resident could possibly qualify to compete in the national event next month.

The Dr. Phillips Pop Warner cheerleaders are enjoying one of their most successful seasons ever. All three squads — Pee Wee, Jr. Midget and Midget — won their respective Mid-Florida Championship competitions.
Additionally, both the Jr. Midget and Midget football teams won their championship games and are ranked No. 1 in their respective Mid-Florida divisions.

Two swimming world records were set during a recent fund-raiser for the YMCA Aquatic & Family Center.

Yuko Matsuzaki set a new world record for an open-water lake swim by covering 82 kilometers during 30 hours of nonstop swimming. Matsuzaki was escorted by volunteers in kayaks during the dangerous swim, which totaled more than 51 miles.

At the same event, a group of local swimmers, including Southwest resident and multiple world-record holder John “Lucky” Meisenheimer, M.D., set another world record by completing a 100-kilometer relay. Fifty swimmers swam two kilometers each to clinch the world record after nearly 48 hours of continuous swimming.

The Windermere Bobcats junior cheerleading squad places second at the Mid-Florida Championships in Lakeland.


Kudos to the Windermere Bobcats flag cheerleading squad for placing first at the Mid-Florida Championships in Lakeland. Congratulations also to the Bobcats Junior squad for placing second at the event. In addition, both the varsity and junior-varsity squads will be performing Dec. 10 during the Orlando Magic’s pre-game show.

Olympia High School’s women’s volleyball team defeated Edgewater High School to win the district playoffs. The championship team is coached by Troy Helton, assistant coach Kelly Burke, and manager Erin Crowder.

Dr. Phillips High School wrestlers Jorge Benzaquen and Jared Watkins were each recipients of the athletic department’s Certificate of Leadership Award.

Benzaquen is a senior member of the team and last year was recognized as one of the top wrestlers in Orange County. He has maintained a 3.7 grade-point average and is a member of the Business Academy.
Watkins, a first-year varsity wrestler, is enrolled in one advanced-placement and three honors classes.

The Windermere Wildfire 10-under softball team wins its second consecutive tournament championship. Congratulations to (front, l. to r.) The Windermere Wildfire 10-under softball team placed first at Shocktoberfest in Altamonte Springs, earning its second consecutive championship.

Olympia High School’s varsity cross country team traveled to South Carolina to compete in the Furman University Invitational. The girls team placed ninth out of 45 schools, and the boys finished in 11th place.

That same weekend, the junior-varsity teams participated in the Cypress Creek Open. The girls team won the meet, with seven runners placing in the top 21; and the boys team placed third.

Sand Lake Elementary School students participated in the NFL-sponsored Punt, Pass and Kick football competition. Fifth-grader Lauren Oxford placed first in her age division and continued on to represent SLES at the next level of competition, which was held at a Tampa Bay Buccaneers home football game. Other notable finishers included Ryan Goonan and Evan McDonaugh, who each placed second in their respective age groups.

Bridgewater Middle School’s boys soccer team finishes the season with a 6-3 record, placing second in its cluster and advancing to the A Bracket of the county championship.

The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips donated $2,500 to Dr. Phillips High School’s athletic department during the school’s recent Community Night football game. The money will be used to renovate the weight room at the football stadium.

Keene’s Pointe resident Olivia Bennington wins five ribbons at the Grand Cypress Equestrian Center Hunter Jumper Competition.


Ten-year-old Olivia Bennington of Keene’s Pointe earned five ribbons at the Grand Cypress Equestrian Center Hunter Jumper Competition. Olivia, who has been riding for almost four years, is trained by Jenna Von See.

Special Olympics swimmer Krista Pohorenec won silver medals in the 400-and 1,500-meter freestyles, and 4x100 freestyle relay, as well as a bronze medal in the 800 freestyle, at the 2007 Special Olympics World Games in Shanghai, China. Pohorenec trains at the YMCA Aquatic & Family Center and is coached by Southwest resident John “Lucky” Meisenheimer, M.D., and Larry Peck.

Foundation Academy’s women’s varsity volleyball team defeated Orlando Christian Prep to win the Class 1A District 6 Championship. The team is coached by Stacey Richards, Jill Cox and Debbie Skinner; and statisticians are Christy Higgs and Harriet Richards.

Ocoee High School’s football team defeated West Orange High School 14-13 to maintain possession of the coveted Shield trophy for the second consecutive year. Despite the Warrior’s 296 yards earned — compared to the Knight’s 141 — WOHS was unable to capitalize on OHS’s numerous turnovers, and even managed to commit a few of its own. In the end, WOHS’s missed field-goal attempt finalized a scoreless second half and cemented OHS’s victory.

The Windermere Women’s Golf Association held its own version of the Solheim Cup, pitting golfers from Europe against those from the United States. WWGA members were divided into two groups, and a random drawing decided which team would represent each country. After a competitive day on the course, Team Europe walked away with the win.

Dr. Phillips High School graduate and University of Mississippi freshman Chris Warren was named starting point guard at UM. He scored 17 points in his collegiate debut and awed the crowd with his two-handed breakaway dunk.

While at DPHS, Warren set 20 school records, was named to the All-State team for two consecutive years, and led the Panthers to the state finals.

Vinny Torres of the Florida Soccer Alliance Super-Y league 16-under soccer team is chosen to attend the National Olympic Development Program Camp.


Phillip Borde and Vinny Torres of the Florida Soccer Alliance Super-Y league 16-under soccer team were selected to attend the exclusive National Olympic Development Program Camp. Borde and Torres attend Ocoee and Olympia high schools, respectively, and are coached by Curt Hernandez.

The Orange County Youth Lacrosse Westside Warriors enjoyed a great season. Six new members joined the team, with first-time player Taylor VanBuskirk earning the Hustle or Die Award for giving his all to the sport. In addition, goalie Jonah Larsen was asked to play for the Orlando OCYL Blue Devils 13-under travel team for the Derek Pieper Memorial Cup tournament.

OCYL registration for the spring season begins next month.

Congratulations to the following Dr. Phillips High School student-athletes who were recognized for their accomplishments:

Football safety Clay Lee verbally committed to play for the University of Memphis. Lee is one of the Panthers’ top defensive players, earning nearly 70 tackles this season. He led the team last year with 100 tackles and one interception. He is the fifth Division 1 commitment for DPHS this year.

Freshman football quarterback Patrick Fenlon passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more to defeat Freedom High School and end the season with a perfect 5-0 record. This is DPHS’s first undefeated freshman football season in at least 10 years.

DPHS defeated West Orange High School in the annual football battle for the Ole Orange Crate trophy. The Panthers won with a score of 33-13.
Senior Lisa Vinson, a four-year member of the DPHS basketball program, was honored with the athletic department’s Certificate of Leadership Award.

The women’s cross country team placed first at the Cypress Creek Invitational. Team leaders were Rachel Boggs, Katie Cagle and Sara Mund.

During the junior-varsity cross country meet, Alexis Keirsted set a personal record with a time of 22 minutes, 1 second, to lead the team to a third-place finish.

At the Metro Conference Championship, the women’s cross country team placed fourth, and the men’s team placed fifth. The top five women runners were Boggs, Cagle, Mund and Sarai Waters. The teams continued on to the district tournament, where the women placed third overall, and the men placed fifth.

Former softball standout and current DPHS Hall of Famer Beth (Dieter) McClendon was named head softball coach at Florida International University. She has coached at the University of Houston and Stetson University and is married to former DPHS baseball star Matt McClendon.
Softball star Susie Stimmel was named to the All-Metro Conference team. In addition to setting the school record for consecutive hits (17), she is batting over .600, with a pair of home runs, 10 doubles, two triples, and 23 runs batted in.

Swimming and diving team members Katie Ambrose, Stephanie Brandt, Jacob Gordon, Caitlin Massey, Ben Tutchton, and Austin Ward were each honored with the athletic department’s Certificate of Leadership Award.
Also, both the men’s and women’s swimming teams placed second at their respective district tournaments. District champions include Ellice Mae Sanchez, Ashley Alliano, Cristina Sanchez, Nicole Gaynor and Tutchton.
