• Longtime Dr. Phillips Charities leader retires
After more than a half century of service to Dr. Phillips Charities and rising from the role of bookkeeper to CEO, J.A. “Jim” Hinson retired in March from his role as president of the not-for-profit Dr. P. Phillips Foundation — the final leadership post he held with the two organizations making up Dr. Phillips Charities.
“Jim Hinson has dedicated nearly 50 years to bettering the community,” said Rob Mellen, president of Dr. Phillips Inc. “The Dr. Phillips Charities have been enriched with Jim’s outstanding leadership. We will continue to honor the Phillips’ family legacy by building on the great work he has done.”
Mellen was elected as president of the foundation to succeed Hinson, who had served in that position for the past 23 years. Hinson will continue to serve on the board of the organization as chairman. Mellen has been serving as president of Dr. Phillips Inc. since November 2007.
Although Hinson is backing away from his day-to-day activities with Dr. Phillips Charities, he will become a consultant to the organization, working on various community-related matters. The last leader of Dr. Phillips to be personally acquainted with members of the Phillips family, Hinson has carried out the family’s wish to use their citrus holdings for charitable purposes in Central Florida for more than 50 years.
“The Dr. Phillips Charities will continue its commitment to improving the lives of others through ongoing charitable giving to local nonprofits,” Mellen said.

• Southwest children hop for Jerry’s Kids
Even the youngest Central Florida residents can help Jerry’s Kids by participating in a Hop-a-Thon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Hop-a-Thon is part of MDA’s national disability awareness initiative, organized by child-care centers and elementary schools across the country. Youngsters participating in Hop-a-Thons, along with their parents, obtain pledges and donations to benefit MDA based on how many times each child can hop in two minutes. Southwest-area schools already participating in the program include The Crenshaw School and StarChild Academy.
“The enthusiasm and tremendous support of area child-care centers [and schools] will help this year’s Hop-a-Thon program exceed last year’s total. Most importantly, children will gain heightened awareness about what it means to help others,” said Tammy Clelland, district director of the Central Florida MDA office.
