Cassandra “Scotti” Doty of Keene’s Pointe recently won the 36-hole Keene’s Pointe Ladies Golf Championship by one stroke.

Orlando Magic player Dwight Howard was named Aleve Hustle Player of the Year during halftime at the Magic’s final regular-season game. At the conclusion of each home game, one player was chosen as Aleve Hustle Player of the Game. Howard earned this honor more than any other player this season. In addition, the Lake Butler Sound resident was named to the All-NBA First Team. He is only the third player in Magic history to receive this honor.

Olympia High School lacrosse players Katie Carbiener and Carly Garrison were honored with All-American honorable mentions.
This is the second All-American honorable mention for Carbiener, who received a scholarship to play at Longwood University. She led the Titans in ground balls, received the Titan Award, and was name OHS Female Athlete of the Year.
Garrison, a rising senior, has been a varsity starter for three years. She recently surpassed 100 career goals and 150 total points, as well as received the Coaches Award.

Thornebrooke Elementary School Exceptional Student Education students participated in the District Special Olympics at Lake Highland Preparatory School and Area 7 Special Olympics at Freedom High School.  The JC Warriors 15-under boys Premier League soccer team defeats Football Club America to win the Space Coast Cup. Kudos to teammates (front, l. to r.) The Orlando-based JC Warriors 15-under Premier League soccer team traveled to Cocoa Beach, where it defeated Football Club America to win the Space Coast Cup. The boys scored 19 goals in five games to seal their championship.
Part of the Soccer For Humanity club, the Warriors are composed of students from Gotha, Ocoee, Southwest and Chain of Lakes middle schools, as well as Olympia High School.

 Foundation Academy tennis player Rachel Smith competes at the district tournament.
 Foundation Academy tennis player Justin Bickerstaff earns a first-round victory at the district tournament.
Foundation Academy’s girls tennis team placed third at the district tournament, which is the best showing in the school’s history. Champions included Lauren Andrews, Emily Etchison, Amber Saunders and Rachel Smith.
The boys team had first-round victories from Alex Aders and Justin Bickerstaff.

 Olympia High School’s men’s and women’s tennis teams celebrate the completion of their seasons.
Olympia High School’s men’s and women’s tennis teams completed successful seasons. Each team earned its individual district championship title, and the men went on to defeat West Orange High School to be named regional champion.
Congratulations to the following members of the men’s team: John Cappabianca, Jack Carter, Levan Clark, Ian Clukay, Ted Freemyer, Kimbal Hitchcock, Tyler Hundley, Jose Mendez, Andrew Monroe, Charles Parker, Diego Pires, Chadwick Silan, Andy Stimmel, Sam Wood, and Jon and Justin Woodruff.
Congratulations also to the members of the women’s team: Alexis Cook, Winter Davenport, Hannah Grombol, Florencia Gutierrez, Angela Head, Lindsey Jackson, Sarah Monroe, Morgan Murray, Chelsea Nething, Toshica Rathore, Raquel Rodriguez, Taylor Sucher, Stephanie Vretenarski and Alex Wagy.

Dr. Phillips resident Doug Trucks and his son, Andrew, recently traveled to Shea Stadium in New York to watch the Major League Baseball New York Mets battle the Milwaukee Brewers. However, rather than enjoying the game from the stands, Trucks was the lucky fan chosen to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Congratulations to the following Dr. Phillips High School teams and student-athletes who were recognized for their accomplishments: With a cumulative grade-point average of 3.445, DPHS’s fast-pitch softball team won the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 6A Academic State Championship. Other teams that earned recognition included flag football, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s track and field, baseball, men’s and women’s water polo, and women’s lacrosse.
Senior Corey Boston received a Florida Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Sportsmanship Award. Boston, who is known as a gentleman both on and off the field, earned letters in football, wrestling and track and field.
Multisport athlete Latifat Oginni received a full scholarship to attend the University of Florida. She also was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Florida Association of State and Federal Educational Program Administrators. Oginni lettered in cross country, weightlifting, flag football, and track and field.
During DPHS’s athletic awards ceremony, Oginni and wrestler Jorge Benzaquen were named as the year’s most outstanding athletes, and Oginni and soccer player Eddie Moffitt received William C. Spoone Scholar-Athlete awards. Also honored at the ceremony were Katie Ambrose and Boston, who received Bob Noyes Sportsmanship awards; and Lenin Vazquez, who received the 2008 Coach of the Year Award.
Principal’s awards were presented to Hannah Morrell, athletic training; Vinnie Perrotti, baseball; Makenson Joseph and Kelsey Fonnett, basketball; Evan Byron and Meaghan Reardon, bowling; Lindsey Heldt, cheerleading; Ryan Dey and Stephanie Pancotto, cross country; Sandale Keaton, flag football; Ricardo Miller, football; Nick Pavlovsky and Rebecca Lenning, golf; Brett Maurer and Alexis Keirsted, lacrosse; Tim Molner and Ashley Womack, soccer; Lauren Hartman, fast-pitch softball; Jamie Pindulic, slow-pitch softball; Ben Tutchton and Stephanie Brandt, swimming; Michael Haddock and Rachel Conway, tennis; Roberto Petit-Frere and Dynasty Jones, track; Christian Hepler and Allison Heaney, volleyball; Jake Gordon and Ambrose, water polo; Jonathan Moran, wrestling; and Jacob Farber and Oginni, weightlifting.
Baseball star Jason Rich, a 2004 graduate, was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame, along with former men’s golf coach Bob Fedell.
Rich enjoyed a successful baseball career at Florida State University, where he is ranked as one of the top-20 scorers in the school’s history.
Fedell has taught at DPHS since its inception 20 years ago, and he led the golf team to state championships in 1990 and 1991, as well as a state runner-up finish in 1989. He was elected to the Metro Conference Hall of Fame in 1992 and continues to be one of DPHS’s most visible supporters of student athletics.

After receiving a 50 percent match from The McCormick Foundation, the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation’s Black Tie and Tennies Charity Gala raised $501,760, a 5 percent increase over last year’s event.
Featuring Magic players, coaches and staff members, the gala is is one of the area’s most popular fund-raising events.
