Dr. Phillips High School’s wrestling team placed eighth at the Flagler Palm Coast Rotary Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Jared Watkins (119 lbs.) and Janz Lado (125 lbs.) placed second in their respective weight classes, and Zach Whitmire (112 lbs.) placed third.

The Central Florida Youth Football League is accepting registrations for players and cheerleaders in kindergarten through eighth grade. There are no weight limits for seventh- and eighth-grade football teams, which play by high school rules, so students of any weight can play any position.

Football practices begin July 26, and games will be held Saturdays at 9 a.m. The cost is $175 per player, which includes a helmet, shoulder pads, game pants and a jersey. Players must maintain a 2.0 GPA and be in good standing at school.

The cheerleading program is $165 per student, which includes a uniform. Qualified teams will compete at national championships.
Applications also are being accepted for coaches and cheer program leaders.

Orlando Area Rowing Society members participated in an ergathon fundraiser during Windermere’s Treebute celebration. About 95 teens in grades eight through 12 rowed on rowing machines equipped with ergometers near Windermere’s Town Hall. Team members solicited donations based on the number of kilometers they rowed. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase three new boats, oars and additional equipment.

Orlando All-Star Cub cheerleaders performed for residents at Madison House assisted-living facility in Dr. Phillips. The girls also stayed and talked with the residents, who enjoyed watching the squad’s latest routine.

Dr. Phillips High School’s varsity competitive cheerleading squad wins the Florida Athletic Coaches Association state championship for the second consecutive year.



Dr. Phillips High School’s junior-varsity competitive cheerleading squad takes home top honors from the Florida Athletic Coaches Association state championship.


Dr. Phillips High School’s varsity and junior-varsity competitive cheerleading squads placed first in their respective divisions at the Florida Athletic Coaches Association state championship. This was the second consecutive state win for the varsity team.

The Rotary Club of South Lake County is holding its seventh annual charity golf tournament April 16 at 7 a.m. at Sanctuary Ridge Golf Club, located at 2601 Diamond Club Road in Clermont.

The cost is $65 per person, and sponsorships range from $250 to $2,500. Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs in south Lake County.

Congratulations to Montverde Academy’s basketball team for placing first at the annual Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament.


Montverde Academy hosted its annual Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament, which featured some of the top basketball teams from across the U.S. The host team dominated throughout the tournament, defeating Findlay College Prep at the Henderson International School 54-51 in the final game to take home the championship. Senior James Bell led the Eagles with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and was recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player.

The Orlando Area Rowing Society will sponsor the 12th annual OARS Invitational Regatta on March 13 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake. More than 2,000 high-schoolers from Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Canada are expected to compete in the regatta, which is considered one of the Southeast’s most prestigious rowing events. In addition, on March 14, the adult masters rowers will participate in the OARS Master Invitational Regatta from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

There is a $4 entry fee for the park; however, the event is free and open to the public.

Congratulations to the following Dr. Phillips High School teams and student-athletes who were recently recognized for their accomplishments:

Men’s cross country runners Josh Boggs, Novian Middleton, Daniel Millay and Alex Mund were named to the All-Metro Conference team. Middleton and Mund also were named to the All-Central Florida first team, and Millay earned second-team honors. In addition, Mund has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Women’s cross country freshman Dana Demsky was named to the All-Metro Conference team.

Women’s swim team members Alice Horton, Halie Lacey, Cristina and Ellice Mae Sanchez, and Meredith Smith were named to the All-Metro Conference team.

Volleyball players Megan Hodges and Tiffany Strong were named to the All-Metro Conference team. Hodges also was named to the All-Central Florida first team.

With a record of 25-0, the women’s basketball team earned its first undefeated regular season in the school’s history.

Five Panthers signed letters of intent on National Signing Day. Football players Charles Favors, Marvin Ford and Marquis Hood committed to Colorado State University; and Kenny Shaw signed with Florida State University. Soccer player Alexis Garrand signed with the University of West Florida.

The Olympia Titan Pop Warner football and cheerleading programs are holding a registration session March 13 from 9 a.m.-noon in Olympia High School’s gym lobby, located at 4301 S. Apopka-Vineland Road in Orlando. Children ages 5 to 15 are welcome to participate, and payment plans are available.
