Lake Whitney Elementary
 Lake Whitney Elementary fifth-graders Kami Collazo (left) and Hope D’Erasmo wear headgear during the school’s Hats for Haiti Day.
Lake Whitney Elementary recently held a Hats for Haiti Day, during which students were allowed to wear hats to school in exchange for a small donation to benefit the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The children raised more $1,100, which was donated to a Haitian relief fund.
MetroWest Elementary
 MetroWest Elementary fifth-graders in Ruthann Paul-Suess’ (back, center) gifted class pack supplies to be sent to victims of the Haitian earthquake.
Students in Ruthann Paul-Suess’ gifted classes at MetroWest Elementary have been collecting nonperishable goods and supplies from MWES classrooms to send to earthquake victims in Haiti. The school’s main office also is a drop-off location for donations from the public. For more information, call 407-296-6450.
Sand Lake Elementary

Robynique Brown and Gabriella Lugo, along with Ireland Frost, created the Hearts for Haiti valentine gram program at Sand Lake Elementary. The fifth-graders sold the valentines to fellow students and raised $732.88, which was donated to the American Red Cross to benefit victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
Spring Lake Elementary
 Students from each class at Spring Lake Elementary share an original story during the school’s Winter Literary Circle.
One student from each class at Spring Lake Elementary was asked to share an original story as part of the Winter Literary Circle. Parents also were invited to take part in the special celebration.

Thornebrooke Elementary
 Thornebrooke Elementary students, teachers and families create Haiti Houses to benefit the American Red Cross’s Haitian earthquake relief efforts.
Students, teachers and families from Thornebrooke Elementary have been working to create more than 1,000 Haiti Houses, small house-shaped pins and magnets that are sold to raise money to benefit victims of the Haitian earthquake. The houses, which were conceived by TES art teacher Lenore Eastham, have been sold at the school and in local stores, raising more than $4,600 for the American Red Cross’ relief efforts.
Windermere Elementary
 Congratulations to Windermere Elementary fifth-grade teacher Karen Ronat for winning a 2009 Excel Award from the Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Fifth-grade teacher Karen Ronat received a 2009 Excel Award from the Foundation for Excellence in Education. The Windermere Elementary educator was selected based on the degree of progress her students demonstrated in English or math on the FCAT for the past three years. Ronat received a package of prizes during the Celebration of Teaching event, which included appearances by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, former Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings, and educator and author Ron Clark.
Chain of Lakes Middle
 Chain of Lakes Middle eighth-grader Clayton Muehlstein earns an honorable mention in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Art Contest.
Congratulations to Chain of Lakes Middle student Clayton Muehlstein for receiving an honorable mention in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Art Contest sponsored by the Solid Waste Division of the Orange County Utilities Department. The eighth-grader, who is a second-year student in Sandra Zaccagnini’s art class, was awarded a ribbon and certificate in honor of his graphic design.
Southwest Middle
 Southwest Middle faculty and staff members, parents, grandparents and students update the school’s facilities by painting two hallways.
After a 2008 survey indicated a need for improvements to the appearance of Southwest Middle’s campus, parent Amy Winslow volunteered to be the chairwoman of the School Advisory Council’s Beautification Project. Last semester, students, parents, faculty, staff and other community members helped by painting two hallways on campus. Students from The Crenshaw School received a private educational tour at SeaWorld Orlando that showcased dolphins, sharks and penguins. The children also attended killer whale and dolphin shows and rode The Polar Express Experience attraction.

St. James Cathedral School, located at 505 E. Ridgewood St. in Orlando, will host an open house March 23 from 8:30-11 a.m. for children in pre-K through eighth grade.
