MetroWest Elementary's PTA announced its 2010-11 officers. They are Lisa McMahon, president; Piper Hood, first vice president; Kim Vicari, second vice president; Amy Anderson, treasurer; Christina Brune, recording secretary; and Jennifer Savage, corresponding secretary.
Whispering Oak Elementary
Whispering Oak Elementary faculty and staff members participated in Take Your Child to Work Day. Children helped with class work, pre-K field day, lunch duty, morning duty and more.

Windy Ridge School
After caring for chicken eggs for 21 days, Robbi Lucas' 2009-10 first-graders at Windy Ridge School welcomed their newly hatched chicks. The chicks, which were named by their student caregivers, were all given new homes on a local farm.

Chain of Lakes Middle
During Teacher Appreciation Week, Chain of Lakes Middle PTSA student representatives and their sponsor, Jeannie Drivas, worked to spruce up the school's memorial garden. The students added new plants and installed a picnic table.

Dr. Phillips High
After graduating from Dr. Phillips High School in 2003, Bobby Adelson Jr. and Danny Snow began the annual Hug Life Award Scholarship. The men collect their spare change throughout the school year and give one $500 scholarship to a college-bound senior who demonstrates courtesy and respect for fellow students, teachers and administrators, and is active in the community. Congratulations to Nat Coombes for being named the award recipient for the 2009-10 school year.

The Olympia High Student Government Association held a farewell banquet for the group's senior officers. Class of 2010 members received goodbye gift bags filled with college memorabilia and a special gift from association advisers Sandra Kubany and Julie Lasowski, who teach math and social studies, respectively.

Windermere Preparatory School celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a campuswide assembly. Festivities included band and choral performances; grade-specific presentations; a visit from the school's original headmistress, Carolyn Cappleman Karraker; and recognition of the charter students, faculty and administrators who are still with the school.

Lake Highland Preparatory School student Beckett Andrew received first-place honors at the school's annual Arts in April event. A panel of judges from the Orlando arts community selected the Dr. Phillips resident's original mixed media piece, titled Fast Track, from more than 100 first-grade entries.
The state level of the National Geographic Bee included two Southwest-area students: Chain of Lakes Middle 2010 graduate Chad Allen of Torey Pines and home-schooler Andrew Langford of Bay Vista Estates. Both Chad and Andrew have made three consecutive appearances at state bees. The boys, who did not know each other before they met at the state competition, were very successful at this year's event, with Andrew and Chad placing sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Rotary Club of Windermere's Art Room event that was held during the annual Festival Among the Lakes drew more than 700 entries from 18 area public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Congratulations to first-place winners Erin Rahill, West Orange High, and Kristina Seregenese, Southwest Middle; second-place winners Samuel Choy, Chain of Lakes Middle, and Catherine Goodman, WOHS; and third-place winners Jonathan Burnet, Lake Highland Preparatory School, and Gabby Schafer, The First Academy.

Four Southwest-area schools had the honor of being named to Newsweek magazine's America's Best High Schools, a list of the best 1,600 high schools in the nation. The schools are ranked according to the total number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests taken at the school, divided by the number of graduating seniors. According to Newsweek, schools that make the list represent the top 6 percent of high schools in the nation. Congratulations to Dr. Phillips High, ranked 463; Ocoee High, ranked 1,324; Olympia High, ranked 210; and West Orange High, ranked 892.
Congratulations to Isabella Outar for being named the winner of Central Florida Preparatory School's Accelerated Reader Program. The 2009-10 third-grader said reading is her favorite hobby.
