At the culmination of their nine-week study about American folk art, third-, fourth- and fifth-graders at Ocoee Elementary listened to a presentation about the art form and folk artists by Katy Boyd and Jennifer Hinkle of House of Blues. The two women brought many original pieces to show the children, who learned that folk artists often create their work from materials that others throw away. |

Elementary fifth-graders competed against more than 40 teams from 23 schools in the Orange County Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ fifth annual Elementary School Mathematics Contest. Team members Graham Jordan, Michael Kuo, Jeffrey Liang and Reece Simon earned the championship trophy for their first-place finish in the math relay and second-place individual competition team average. Congratulations to Jeffrey and Graham for earning the highest SLES team score for the individual competition. The team was led by math teacher Jennifer Rejim and math coach Lynne Grimes. |

| Windermere Elementary is offering a summer session of voluntary pre-K. The session is free for eligible Florida-resident 4-year-olds born between Sept. 2, 2005, and Sept. 1, 2006, who have not received VPK instruction during the 2010-11 school year. The program offers daily developmentally appropriate learning experiences, with a strong emphasis on language development, and runs from June 14 through Aug. 4. When applying at WES, parents should bring a birth certificate, proof of residency, child’s immunization records and health physical results.
