Amy V. Smith, M.S., N.C.C., L.M.H.C., provides therapeutic counseling to children, teens and adults through individual and family counseling. As one of the co-owners of Life Skills Resource Group, she helps clients find balance while they are struggling with life-changing events and the daily pressures of their lives. She believes active listening, empathy and therapeutic relationship provide the foundation for positive change through counseling. Smith’s experience stems from helping others address anxiety, depression, OCD, self-esteem, social and communication skills, and other concerns. Where appropriate, she uses play therapy and introduces Emotional Freedom Techniques, a needlefree version of acupuncture. Smith received her master’s in counseling and psychology from Troy University and her bachelor’s from the University of Central Florida. It is her philosophy that with awareness and a positive outlook, change can happen. Smith is a Cigna behavioral health provider. Morris T. Bird, M.D., A.A.S.M., is responsible for bringing sleep medicine to Orlando by creating the area’s first sleep center 20 years ago. Since then, Dr. Bird and his co-medical director, Robert S. Thornton, M.D., A.A.S.M., now oversee sleep studies at five Florida Hospital locations. Dr. Bird has studied and worked with all forms of sleep medicine, with a concentration in sleep apnea, the most prevalent disorder treated at the center. Dr. Bird is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Inc. in neurology, and The American Board of Sleep Medicine. Robert S. Thornton, M.D., A.A.S.M., conducts and reads sleep studies at five Florida Hospital locations as co-medical director of Florida Hospital’s Center for Sleep Disorders. He has two decades of experience with sleep medicine. Along with his co-medical director, Morris T. Bird, M.D., A.A.S.M., Dr. Thornton was responsible for achieving the first board-certified sleep center in Orlando. Dr. Thornton has studied and worked with all forms of sleep medicine, with a concentration in sleep apnea, the most prevalent disorder seen at the center. Tom Gibbons, director and speech therapist at Orlando Stuttering Center, earned his master’s in communicative disorders at the University of Central Florida in 1999. He has worked with stuttering and fluency disorders in patients of all ages, in a wide range of clinical settings, including public schools, private practice and home health care; as well as taught at the third largest university in the country, with the biggest speech-therapy program in the nation. From 2004-07, Gibbons served as a clinical faculty/adjunct supervisor of stuttering and fluency disorders at UCF. OSC focuses solely on speech therapy, treating stuttering and fluency disorders. Gibbons also is the chapter leader for support groups through the National Stuttering Association. He personally works with all clients, from initial assessments through every step of the therapy process. He is a member of the National Stuttering Association; American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; Special Interest Division 4, Fluency Disorders; and Stuttering Foundation of America. Bikram Yoga Winter Garden |
Bikram Yoga Winter Garden is a 3,000-square-foot yoga studio located at the intersection of Stoneybrook West Parkway and Avalon Road. Taught only by Bikram-certified teachers, Bikram yoga is a 90-minute, 26-posture yoga class, done in a heated room. The heat, which is carefully monitored to ensure air circulation and heat and humidity levels, allows deeper and safer stretching, while the sweat aids in flushing toxins from the body. Additional benefits of Bikram yoga include prevention of illness and injury, and limiting the effects of aging. It also is a great addition to any weight-loss program. This yoga is specifically designed to systematically work every muscle, bone, joint, ligament, tendon, gland and organ in the body, thus improving strength, balance and flexibility. Bikram Yoga Winter Garden boasts a 1,500-square-foot yoga room that is capable of holding up to 65 students per class. Separate men and women’s shower changing rooms are available; and class times are Monday through Friday at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A variety of class packages are available for purchase, as well as drop-in classes at a single rate.
