Kathleen Whalen of Winter Garden announced the engagement of her daughter, Alexandra “Alex” Whalen, to Brandon Russ, son of George and Lizabeth Russ of Fruitland Park. Alex works as the production coordinator for MTV Networks/Telesis, and Brandon is an editor at DNP Studios. Brandon proposed during a hot air balloon ride, and a June 2012 wedding is being planned. |

Central Florida Women’s League members attended a holiday luncheon at Waldorf Astoria Orlando. The event included a silent auction, and new member Nicole Johnson was welcomed to the group. The women also voted to donate $1,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Inc. Entertainment for the luncheon was provided by professional singers and CFWL members Renee Bailey and Angela Courte. |

Members of Dr. Win Service Unit Cadette Troop No. 4601, led by Sand Lake Hills resident Pamela Thompson, co-hosted a Veteran’s Day tribute at Dr. P. Phillips YMCA Family Center. The event included a speech by veteran Omar Burgos, as well as performances by Dr. Phillips High School’s ROTC and drill team, and Southwest Middle School’s chorus. Troop members also collected and shipped more than 180 pounds in care-package donations to troops serving overseas. |

Roger Soderstrom, founder and owner of Stirling Sotheby’s International Realty, announced the appointment of Southwest resident Benjamin Hillman as an international marketing specialist in the Southwest Orlando area. Benjamin is a former hotelier and restaurateur. He previously owned two restaurants, served as a food and beverages manager for the Peabody Hotel Group, and worked in management at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. He earned a real estate license in 2004 and launched his real estate career. |
