Lil Sluggers, a curriculum-based child development program that introduces the game of baseball to children ages 2 through 5, is enrolling players in its summer sessions, being held July 14 through Aug. 25. There are only six children per class, and players can attend a free trial class. Lil Sluggers offers baseball and soccer camps. |

West Orange High School’s softball team defeated Apopka High School to win its district championship. The win advanced the team to the regional competition, where the girls defeated Cypress Creek High School before falling to Boone High School in the regional semifinal. |

YCF Diving placed first in the women’s team championship and second overall at the 2012 YMCA National Championships that was held in Fort Lauderdale. The Layland also competed in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. |

Every member of Olympia High School’s men’s and women’s track teams earned medals at the state meet, with Daniel Dey and Danielle Swasey each earning two medals. The men’s 4x800 relay team placed fifth overall and broke the school record, with a time of 7 minutes, 55 seconds; and the girl’s 4x800 relay team placed fourth overall, also breaking the school record, with a time of 9 minutes, 30 seconds. |

Piper Hood and Bradley Pace traveled to San Francisco to participate in the 32nd annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The Southwest residents swam 1.5 miles from Alcatraz Island to the city’s shoreline, biked 18 miles through San Francisco streets and past landmarks, and ran eight miles to Baker Beach. During the run, participants had to complete the 400-step Equinox Sand Ladder and cross under the Golden Gate Bridge. More than 2,000 athletes from more than 43 countries competed in this year’s event.

The 2001 Lady Hawks fastpitch softball team from Ocoee took top honors in the 10-under division at the National Softball Association Mother’s Day tournament held at West Orange Girls Club Softball Complex in Winter Garden. The girls won their elimination games to face the Windermere Wildfire in the final match, which they won 7-5. |

Palm Lake Elementary School student Brendan Valdes placed fifth overall in the Level 5 division of the 2012 USA Gymnastics Florida State Championships, earning a spot on Team Florida. The Dr. Phillips resident represented the state at the 2012 Region 8 Championships, where Team Florida earned first-place honors. Brendan, who competed against boys from seven states, placed 10th overall. |
