Bay Lake Elementary

Students at Bay Lake Elementary in Horizon West competed against other local schools to vie for the championship title in the Battle of the Books. The Battle of the Books is an academic competition that challenges students to remember important details from the Sunshine State Young Readers’ Award list. The children read the books and practiced for several months to prepare for this event.


As the 2016-17 school year comes to an end, the community of Bay Lake Elementary extends its thanks to the following parents who served as members of the BLES PTO board: Tammy Forrester, president; Beth Siegmann, vice-president; Igraine Hemphill, vice-president; Courtney Surette, vice-president; Jenilee Tomlinson, treasurer; Laura Kleiss, recording secretary; and Jen Iapichino, corresponding secretary.

Whispering Oak Elementary

Whispering Oak Elementary 2016-17 students make an impact by recycling.

Whispering Oak Elementary received an award from the Orange County Public Schools Environmental Compliance Department for recycling the most in the West Learning Community. WOES’s 2016-17 recycling team was composed of Mrs. Quinones’ students.

 

 

 

 

 

Gotha Middle

Grant Christian Sicard, a Windermere Chase resident and 2016-17 Gotha Middle student, places in the top 1 percent of seventh-graders.

Grant Christian Sicard, a straight-A honors student and 2016-17 seventh-grader at Gotha Middle, was invited to take the ACT test, sponsored by Duke University’s Talent Identification Program. Only the top 5 percent of seventh-graders are invited. His score was as good or better than 50 percent of recent high school graduates across the country and placed him in the top 1 percent of seventh-graders. Grant was offered a place in the summer studies programs at Rollins College, and Duke and Vanderbuilt universities. During his free time, the Windermere Chase resident enjoys baseball, golf and fishing. He is also an alter server at Holy Family Catholic Church and will be testing for his third-degree black belt in taekwondo in December.

 

SunRidge Middle

SunRidge Middle students taste and rate food for the 2017-18 school year.

Students at SunRidge Middle had the unique opportunity to participate in Orange County Public Schools’ Best Bites, a food tasting for the 2017-18 school year. Different vendors brought a variety of selections, and the students rated the items. This way, the youngsters have a say in their food choices for the        next school year.

The 2016-17 robotics team Clockwork Mania from Orlando Science School received the chairman’s award at the Alabama Super Regional competition. As a result of their achievement, the team received an invitation to the world championship that will take place in St. Louis.


 

During Science Week at The Crenshaw School, high schoolers don masks and gloves to test for bacteria.

The Crenshaw School recently held a Science Week. As part of the activities, the 2016-17 high schoolers participated in crime-scene investigations, recorded heart rates while playing video games, tested for bacteria and performed dissections.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Beckett Andrew of FMI STEM Academy participates in the dual-enrollment program at Valencia College.

At the age of 13, 2016-17 eighth-grader Beckett Andrew has become one of the youngest students in the dual-enrollment program at Valencia College. He attends FMI STEM Academy, where sixth- through 12th-graders who meet the dual-enrollment criteria can earn college credit under the direction of their high school instructor. Beckett is the oldest son of Brian and Jo Ellen Andrew, who are residents of Dr. Phillips.

Windermere Union Church 2016-17 VPK students received a special visit from pilots 1st Officer Radamaker and Col. MacLeod. Radamaker spoke about his job with American Airlines, flying overseas and for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. MacLeod discussed his role with the United States Air Force Academy, as well as his own graduation from the academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. MacLeod told the children how his dream of being a pilot began when he attended an air show when he was 5 years old. He also brought along a helmet that he has to wear while flying and discussed all the parts of it.

 

 


 

VPK classes at Christ The King Lutheran PreSchool participate in a sack race during their Easter party.

Christ The King Lutheran PreSchool celebrated this past Easter with lots of fun and games for the children. They painted pictures of eggs; dined on special snacks, like bunny juice boxes and pudding “dirt” cups; and played games, including a sack race.

 

 

 


 

Paula Haughey, Holy Family Catholic School’s new art teacher, supports eighth-grader Charlie Campbell during his advanced band performance at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando’s Fine Arts Extravaganza.

Holy Family Catholic School’s new art teacher, Paula Haughey, helped guide 2016-17 student artists with her creativity and positive reinforcement at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando’s Fine Arts Extravaganza, held at Bishop Moore Catholic High School. Eighth-grader Charlie Campbell seized the opportunity to participate in the advanced band program. Students Emily Asquino, Sean Fitzpatrick, Megan Grindle, Clara Popper, and Marian Mongello were also able to showcase their talents and masterpieces at the exhibition. In total, 14 Catholic schools in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties displayed their artistic and musical talents at the event.
