WOHS swimming and diving team takes Swim Metro Conference Championship … and more Southwest sports!

The Diamond Resorts Invitational, benefiting Florida Hospital for Children, an event recognized as the most unique in golf, will feature five top LPGA players competing alongside 28 PGA Tour Champions legends and 48 entertainment and sports celebrities from Jan. 12-14, 2018.

Held at Tranquilo Golf Club at Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World, the tournament will be nationally televised on the Golf Channel all three days. It is the first PGA Tour Champions Challenge Season event of the 2018 calendar year and has raised more than $2.3 million for Florida Hospital for Children
since 2013.

The West Orange High School girls swimming and diving team wins the Swim Metro Conference Championship.

West Orange High School’s swimming and diving teams competed against eight other local high schools for the Swim Metro Conference Championship. Congratulations to the girls team for winning first place and the boys team for taking second.


Olympia High School’s baseball team hosted its annual golf tournament at Hawk’s Landing Golf Course. The fundraising event provided a fun day of 18 holes and included lunch. Proceeds from the tournament will help improve the baseball program’s facilities and other needs.


The SunRidge Middle School girls soccer team, led by coach Rachel Ridgeway, places second in the Orange County Public Schools Middle School Soccer Championships.

Several student-athletes at The First Academy signed National Letters of Intent and committed to play their respective sports at their chosen colleges and universities. Kendrick Calilao will play baseball for the University of Florida. Sydney Ellis signed to play volleyball at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Raymond Fields will play baseball at the University of South Florida. Dakoda Grove committed to Rollins College to play baseball. Asia Newsome will play basketball for Rollins College. Congratulations to all of these seniors!

The First Academy, located at 2667 Bruton Blvd. in Orlando, will host The City Beautiful Invitational Basketball Tournament from Dec. 27-30.

The inaugural event will take place in TFA’s new state-of-the-art Cramer Family Field House and feature 16 teams from across Central Florida, the state and the country. Tip-off is at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, and the championship game will be played Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. General admission is $5 per day or $15 for a four-day ticket. Volunteer
opportunities, sponsorships and half-time performances are available.
