School Siting Ordinance Updated … and other News & Business Briefs

Southwest resident and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the board of county commissioners joined Orange County School Board Chairman Bill Sublette, Southwest resident and Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Barbara Jenkins, and OCPS board members to announce the passing of the updated school siting ordinance and participated in a ceremonial signing. The updated ordinance, which was passed at a recent commissioners meeting, establishes standards for OCPS to build new schools and renovate existing sites, including charter schools.

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce held its 15th annual Best FestThe Taste of West Orange” along the shores of Starke Lake in Ocoee. More than 60 food and drink vendors treated attendees to mouthwatering samples.

The United Methodist Women of St. Lukes United Methodist Church raise more than $37,000 at their annual Holiday Bazaar.

At the United Methodist Women of St. Lukes United Methodist Church’s 34th annual Holiday Bazaar, more than 14 specialty shops were set up to resemble a Christmas market with handmade fall and holiday crafts for sale. Homemade pickles and baked goods, along with antique and decorator items, were offered for shoppers. Santa Claus greeted the children, and entertainment was provided by the Dr. Phillips High School choir.

Ann Varkey of Dr. Phillips held a holiday event at the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA to help special-needs and homeless individuals. Attendees included several residents from The Russell Home for Atypical Children and a special appearance from Santa and Mrs. Claus. Free and healthy holiday meals were provided to attendees. A typical gift box included fruits, vegetables, meat and nonperishable items that would allow families to make complete meals.

During a Bucket List Hiking Club trip, Matt Durfee of Bay Hill and Denise Orlando of Keenes Pointe visit a remote beach path near Prestwick, Scotland.

Bay Hill resident Matt Durfee led the sixth international trek of the Bucket List Hiking Club, which took place in western Scotland. The group hiked 52 miles during three days, and the route followed the northern segment of the Ayrshire Coastal Path. Future hikes include Normandy, France and Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa.
